Notes From the Grand Rapids Diocese

Our parishioners have always generously responded with financial support following a natural disaster. We are sure many of your parishioners are asking how they can support the people of Texas, beyond prayer, during this difficult time. We have not received word from the USCCB yet calling for a second collection. In the meantime, we have published a webpage with links to Catholic social service agencies in Texas where monetary donations to support those in need may be directed. Please share these resources with your parishioners.

The USCCB issued a statement in response to the recent interpretation of the Johnson Amendment publicized by the IRS. It reads in part, “The Catholic Church maintains its stance of not endorsing or opposing political candidates.” The full statement is available on our website. Please share this statement as needed with those who inquire.

Last Call for the True Adventure Series

Reentry Resource Summit

Donations are being accepted now through Friday, July 25.
On Thursday, Aug. 7, Prison and Jail Ministry will again host and sponsor the Michigan Department of Corrections Offenders Success Reentry Summit for Kent County. This summit offers individuals on parole and probation the opportunity to meet with over 20 support service providers and includes a free raffle, breakout sessions and a keynote speaker. In the past, over 100 individuals attended this event. We are seeking the following donations to be given to the summit attendees and to include in the raffle:

New Adult Bikes

New Chromebooks

Wallets containing gift cards to:

restaurants that do not sell alcohol (Subway, McDonalds, Panera Bread)
barber shops/hair salons

Backpacks for men and women containing some of the following items:

shampoo
conditioner
body wash
body lotion
bath towels
hand towels
wash cloths

If we exceed the number of donations needed for the Kent County summit, we will give additional donations to the summits held in Allegan, Montcalm, and Muskegon counties.

All donations can be delivered, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm to Cathedral Square Center, 360 Division Ave S, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
