100 Years of ABCs
V Vacation Bible School – The first known Vacation Bible School was held at Saint Thomas in 1984. In 1985, the program grew to 61 children from ages 4 through 4th grade. In 1986, the program took on a Catholic theme and was called “Scripture Safari.” Beginning in 1996, a team of volunteers from Saint Thomas joined our across the street neighbors, Calvary Reformed Church, to host this shared ministry for children. Over 200 children from both churches and the neighborhood participated during that first year. In 2001, Pam and Steve Strobel stepped up to lead the ministry which still involved volunteers and students from both churches. In 2003, Calvary stepped away from participation in VBS and it became a sole St. Thomas ministry. Pam and Steve graciously served as VBS directors for 21 years and involved their entire family in the ministry, both as participants and volunteers. Vacation Bible School still remains a summer favorite for many children and families under the current leadership of John Paul and Christina Strobel.
