Vacation Bible School

We are excited to announce that we have started planning for
VBS 2020, “Rocky Railway: Jesus’ Power Pulls Us Through!”

Monday, August 3 – Thursday, August 6 in the early evening hours

Please note the following information:

  1. We ask you to keep the VBS leadership team in your prayers as we plan this year’s unique VBS experience.

  2. The actual number of students (and family members) that will be allowed to attend will depend on guidance provided by the State of Michigan and the Grand Rapids Diocese.  Please note that any plans that are made may need to be altered due to updated guidance.

  3. Registration will open on Friday, July 10.

  4. VBS 2020 will be different than past years.  Below are some of the changes that are being considered.  The leadership team will be meeting to work out the details.

    1. Crews (normally a group of 4-6 unrelated students with an adult leader) would be replaced by families. This will prevent having unrelated people traveling together exclusively for the entire VBS. This will also impact our traditional structure of Elementary, Preschool, and Nursery. If a parent/grandparent/another responsible adult cannot attend for a family, the parent(s) may directly arrange for their child(ren) to be part of another family’s group which should be limited to 6-8 people.  We will need to be notified of these family groupings to keep track of everyone in attendance.

    2. Keep VBS to only 2 hours, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm for 4 days (Monday through Thursday) with a potential rain make-up day on Friday. We are hoping the 6:30 start time will allow families to have dinner and come to St. Thomas and still finish at an appropriate time. Due to the shorter time, we will not provide a snack.

    3. Hold VBS primarily outdoors. This will allow for better social distancing. We will need to consider where we will gather, what stations we will have and where these will meet.

    4. Due to the setup of this VBS, the number of needed volunteers (teen and adult) will be limited. Most volunteers will likely be the family members of the stations leaders. Any youth older than 6th grade, that would normally be allowed to become a volunteer, may participate with their family, if they should choose to do so.

With God’s Peace and Love,
The VBS Leadership Team
